World AIDS Day: December 1, 2011

WORLD AIDS DAY ACTIVITIES ABOUND THROUGHOUT HUDSON VALLEY

Hawthorne, NY—AIDS-Related Community Services (ARCS) is sponsoring and supporting several World AIDS Day events throughout the Hudson Valley on December 1, 2011 with a variety of community partners. World AIDS Day is celebrated on December 1 each year around the globe. It has become one of the most recognized international health days and a key opportunity to raise awareness, commemorate those who have passed on, and celebrate victories such as increased access to treatment and prevention services. This year’s theme is “Getting to Zero.”

World AIDS Day efforts are organized globally by the World AIDS Campaign, which is using this World AIDS Day as a launching pad for four years of concerted efforts to get several key factors to zero: Zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS related deaths.

ARCS will be partnering with MAC Cosmetics in their Poughkeepsie and Hawthorne offices to offer complimentary beauty makeovers to its clients. Twelve MAC employees will volunteer for the afternoon to pamper clients living at or below the poverty line. “We’re thrilled to work with MAC on this special day to make these women and girls feel beautiful,” said Ellen Maher, Community Relations Manager for ARCS. “The focus is on them and what makes them strong, sexy women.”

ARCS employees will also be participating in World AIDS Day events on the Walkway Over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie, Rockland Community College, the Sullivan County AIDS Task Force’s event in Monticello, a vigil in Kingston, and a rally in Newburgh. For details on these and other World AIDS Day commemorations, visit www.arcs.org.

The global HIV response is at a pivotal moment, where huge strides forward are at serious risk and current approaches are reaching their limits. Only one third of the 15 million people living with HIV in need of life long treatment are receiving it. New infections continue to outpace the number of people starting treatment, while the upward trend in resources suffered a serious downturn this year.

Go 'Gades, Fight AIDS: ARCS and the Renegades BOTH Win!

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

ARCS held its very first “Go ‘Gades, Fight AIDS” event in conjunction with our local minor league baseball team, the Hudson Valley Renegades, on Monday, August 24, and Thursday, September 3, 2009. Over 80 ARCS/Renegades fans gathered at the Dutchess Stadium–affectionately known as “the Dutch”–for free hot dogs, free sodas and complementary Renegades caps. If you haven’t been to a ‘Gades game, we highly recommend it! It’s a fun, inexpensive treat for all kinds of families, featuring lots of games and activities in between innings.

The son of one of our staffers, a young man named Jeremiah, threw out the ceremonial first pitch for ARCS on the 24th, and our very own Jana Fernandes showed off her pitching skills for us on the 3rd. We gathered in the general admission section behind our Hudson Valley AIDS Walk banner and watched the home team trounce the Tri-City Valley Cats. For the second game, the ‘Gades fought the Brooklyn Cyclones, the farm team for the New York Mets. The entire stadium was in for a surprise treat when Carlos Beltran, center fielder for the Mets, came to play against the Renegades. Despite their star power, the Cyclones submitted to the ‘Gades in a tense, bottom of the ninth showdown.

Special thanks to the Renegades sales team for all their hard work and dedication in making these two events happen! We’re already looking forward to next year’s season.

Go Gades Fight AIDS

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Join AIDS-Related Community Services and the Hudson Valley Renegades–the area’s only minor league baseball team–for one of two games to benefit ARCS’ programs and services.

On Monday, August 24th, baseball fans, families and anyone looking for some fun can gather at Dutchess Stadium in Wappingers Falls to cheer for the ‘Gades while fighting AIDS. Bring along non-perishable food items (such as canned or boxed goods) or personal hygiene products (like toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, etc) to donate to ARCS’ Poughkeepsie food pantry. The ‘Gades play the Tri-City Valley Cats.

Can’t make the 24th? Then grab your ticket for Thursday, September 3rd instead! The ‘Gades take on the Brooklyn Cyclones. (Of course, you diehard baseball fans will want to come to both!)

Purchase your advance ticket packages for just $15 each, which includes:

Renegades baseball cap

…and $5 goes back to ARCS! What a deal! It’s an easy, entertaining way to help those in need while having a great time with your family and friends.
