More HIV Equal Pics from Our Regional Prevention Initiative
Thursday, April 3rd, 2014 HVCS’ Claribel–a Prevention Specialist on our Project ALERT team–poses for the HIV Equal campaign.
Bryn, a member of Project INFORM, poses for HIV Equal too. ALERT and INFORM participated at an HIV Equal event at SUNY Purchase last month.
ALERT and INFORM Get “Equal” Time with Jack Mackenroth
Friday, March 21st, 2014- INFORM’s Bryn with HIV Equals’ Jack Mackenroth
Staffers from our ALERT and INFORM teams (both programs are part of our Regional Prevention Initiative) performed HIV testing at SUNY Purchase’s “HIV Equals” event on March 14th. Claribel and Bryn went there on our behalf, and tested 80 people that day in just 5 hours–amazing! HIV Equals is a new social media/photo campaign created by former Project Runway contestant and HIV activist Jack Mackenroth and celebrity photographer Thomas Evans. HIV Equals works with the World Health Clinicians located in Norwalk, CT. “Our campaign’s focus is to encourage knowing your HIV status as well as remove the stigma attached to individuals living with the HIV virus,” they say.
RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant Gia Gunn and “The Needle Prick Project” founder Tyler Curry were also there. (Claribel, Bryn – we’re so jealous you got to go!)

Mosaic Center Stocks Up on Nonperishable Foods Thanks to Bronxville Junior League
Tuesday, March 11th, 2014Last year we received a $2,000 grant from the Junior League of Bronxville to help feed hungry families in Lower Westchester. Luckily we had other donations to stock our Mount Vernon food closet until recently, but the time came when we needed more non-perishable foods. Our Education & Prevention Director, Barbara Bennet, took a trip to the nearby Sam’s Club and loaded up two dollies with basics for the Mosaic Center. Our sincere thanks go out to the Junior League of Bronxville for assisting us to feed food-insecure families in Mount Vernon!

Top Community Health Concerns for Westchester and Putnam Counties
Thursday, January 23rd, 2014United Way of Westchester and Putnam recently conducted its “2013 Community Conversations Survey” in the two counties, and the results of the Health survey were particularly interesting.
Top Health Concerns for Westchester residents:
- affordable healthcare and screening
- dealing with chronic illness
- stresses of daily life
- obesity or unhealthy living
Top Health Concerns for Putnam residents:
- mental health
- affordable healthcare and screening
- drug and alcohol use
- dealing with chronic illness
If these are the top concerns for the two counties, HVCS is well-positioned to respond to these needs. We have programs that can assist with almost all of these needs, especially for those on Medicaid. For an infographic showing these top concerns and more, visit UWWP’s website.
